Facebook wins $873 million

FacebookI proudly or maybe not so proudly am addicted to facebook as most of the college population. I personally have never encountered any spam on facebook which I’m quite happy about. I get so much spam on my email accounts it’s become second nature to receiving about 30 spam messages a day. I don’t even think about it while I mass delete them all. Though I find it quite nice that I don’t receive them on facebook.

According to facebook’s lawsuit that they just won they are trying hard to keep it that way. Facebook claims they are devoted to getting rid of any spam but with the software they are allowed to use they can’t stop everything but they’re hoping people will learn from this lawsuit and they wont have more problems with spam. This spammer was able to send out spam convincing people to give up their email and password and then logged into their accounts sending out sexually explicit emails of spam.

Personally I’m very glad facebook is so dedicated to getting rid of spam.

Hot Destinations

Tiger Mountain Ranch

Tiger Mountain Ranch

Being that I am not a world traveler I thought I would include another opinion of top places to go in 2008. According to the nytimes.com Laos is ranked number one with its ancient sites to visit followed by Lisbon where they have created new museums captivating the attention of many people. Though when it comes to the U.S. the top location is ranked number and is Mid-beach, Miami. I’ve never been able to visit any of these locations though someday I hope that I may have the chance.

My ranking system through experience isn’t quite as expansive. Until very recently all I had traveled was up and down the east coast. As of this year I was able to travel and visit Texas and Oklahoma. These determining factors rank my favorite destinations being Henryetta, Oklahoma more specifically Tiger Mountain Ranch; followed by York Beach, Maine and then Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Tiger Mountain Ranch located in Henryetta, Oklahoma isn’t something you’d see come up on many top destinations but it was the best vacation I have had in a long time. Its full of activities keeping you busy at every moment including horseback riding, kayaking, fishing, hiking, streaming, disc shooting, archery, a bobcat encounter, lassoing, shooting a pistol, bead work, campfire songs, cards, pool, digital cable and Indian tribal dances. Not only was it a fun experience but a learning one as well. Just thinking about it makes me want to be there right now.

York Beach, Maine is an old favorite. I’ve been going there since I was a one-year-old. The beaches are beautiful as well as the village with a strip of stores, restaurants, candy shops, an arcade and an amusement park. Theres just a warm happy feeling that comes with vacationing in Maine. The people in town are great as well as the food.

Cocoa Beach, Florida is a nice town about an hour from Orlando which is convenient for day trips as well as being away from all the Disney tourists. Cocoa has great beaches, surf competitions and a busy little town with lots to do including shopping and surfing lessons. My personal favorite clothing store Ron Jon also has one of their few locations there.

Polling Phone Calls

Have you received a phone call recently from someone campaigning for a local election. This past week while laying in bed at my house I got a phone call, the caller ID said it was from Oklahoma. I recently visited family in Oklahoma so thinking it was probably them I answered. A man replied saying hello. I responded saying Hi and then his automated response continued.

First of all, I hate when people have messages or any sort of automated response which makes you think its an actual person then you just realize you’re talking to a machine. The machine recording happened to be for someone running in a local election in my county. I quickly hung up after realizing I was listening to a recorded speech from some local person campaigning. Within five minutes of me hanging up my house phone rang. Across the caller ID popped up Oklahoma with the same number that just called my cell phone. I ignored the phone then heard the automated response playing over my answering machine until I picked up then hung up my phone.

Later that day I was on the phone with my friend when she said someone with an area code of this called me today but I didn’t answer I wonder who it was. It was some guy campaigning for a local office around here I responded getting even more frustrated. How do local campaigners receive phone numbers for everyone in the town? I added myself and my house phone to the phone list of people that telemarketers aren’t allowed to call. Why doesn’t this also include local politicians? My parents even pay to keep my house phone unlisted in the phone book. Did registering to vote give any politicians the right to my phone number?

All I can say is now that I have decided to not vote for anyone who calls my phone with an automated message recorded.

Favorite Photo Galleries

My three favorite photo galleries online are all my favorites for different reasons. I find each of them to be slightly different and I like the differing structure each has. I don’t have an order for which I like the best because I’m not sure which structure I like the best.

The first one I like is MSNBC’s photo gallery. I like it because it’s easy to find. Its listed in the categories on the left of the main site. I really like the large picture that’s a very scenic picture at the top of the gallery. I also like the box underneath the main picture which is very interactive allowing the browser to see the top slide shows, pictures only available on this site as well as how the viewers can get involved with the photo gallery. Underneath this box I like how each topic is organized down the site but I really like that it allows the viewer to chose to show 0,4,9 or 14 stories for the topic. I think the site’s really interactive and allows the viewer to have a lot of control which is what I like about it.

The next site I like I think is a lot different from MSNBC in its format, its the Daily Gazette, a local Schenectady newspaper’s site. The link to the photo gallery is listed on the top of the site, very available and easily found. The reason I mainly chose the Gazette is because of the way the photos are listed. This site unlike MSNBC’s site lists the photo stories in order of date down the screen. Currently the sites main list of stories dates back to November 7, 2007. I thought that aspect of the site was really different and an approach I wouldn’t of thought to use when showing a photo gallery.

The last site I picked was the Times Union. This site lists a link at the top and bottom of the main page. I really liked the overall image of this site. I liked how at the stop it has a little photo strip background to the words photo galleries. The site is organized showing readers photos to the left and a list of stories underneath as well as a link to more galleries then by topics with photos on the right. It then just shows differing stories underneath. At the top all the way to the right it also shows the region in photos and reader photos making people be able to really put their community into the site. This site kind of combined ideas from both MSNBC and the Gazette.

I like the variety of structure and layout in all the sites.

Yankee Stadium

To all Yankee fans the closing of the Yankee stadium was a very sad day. I attended one last game at the stadium this year so I could witness one last game there. Many fans took it as far as to try and steal parts of the stadium, I on the other hand just wanted to witness one last game.

To think that the fans were this sad. The players must of been very upset. In an article I read Roger Clemens, formally a yankee now retired was very upset while watching the last game that he was not mentioned. Though Roger Clemens did help the yankees to many victories, I don’t think he’s top on the list of people who should of been mentioned. Number one on my list would be Joe Torre who led the Yankees to 12 playoffs in a row as well as 4 World Series wins.Compared to Roger Clemens who collectively played with the Yankees for six years. Who played for the Red Sox  for 13 years as well as well as playing with the Blue Jays for two years and the Astros for three years.

The article goes on to talk about how they think he wasn’t mentioned because of his believed steroid usage. Which probably is part of the reason he wasn’t listed because they are trying to keep everyone minds clear of all the steroid problems when remembering Yankee Stadium.

They also bring into the story that Clemens was watching his tv in his mansion that was hit by hurricane Ike. His mansion had flooding in the den and twenty trees down which is very minimal compared to most people who were effected by the hurricane. I find it hard to mention mansion and try to make the reader feel bad for minimal damage to a mansion. Especially coming from someone who in the season of 2006 alone was paid $22 million. So really would you rather read about people trying to steal parts of Yankee Stadium or Clemens not being mentioned at the last game?

School Bullies

At work at channel 13 we were working on promos for the next days news. I had to stay extra late because we had to redo all of the promos because they included a headline stating that a school told a student to stay at home because he had been getting beaten up. We then changed the headline to say that the school felt he was endangered so they had him stay at home, which did sound a lot better. But still, this headline made me want to continue to find the whole story.

While checking on the news channels website I found the whole story. I was surprised to find that a school would tell a child’s parents to not send their son to school because they were in fear of his life. When you send your child to school, you’re expecting him to be safe. I feel that a school should be able to control their students. If a school can not provide a safe environment for your child they should close for the time being or a find a solution of security guards to enforce children’s safety. The first responsibility of a school should be to keep everyone’s children safe.

The child has now been transferred to a new school for his protection. I think this problem should be looked into by his school. I’m glad they decided to transfer him if they couldn’t protect him but I believe they should continue to look into their safety at the school. Many schools have fights and the children get punished and the story is over. Yet this child had ribs broken, scratches and was told not to attend school the next day for fear of his life. This school obviously needs to find better ways to protect it’s children. Whose to say this wont be a continuing problem at this school?

Big Bang Theory?

Image of Hadron Collider

Image of Hadron Collider

I’m not much into science but I did take a class called the Big Bang Theory which is how many people think the earth became created. While at work at News Channel 13 there was a story about a group of scientists in Geneva who are testing out the Big bang theory.

A group of scientists are using a machine which will send particles through a 17 mile long tunnel at very high speeds that will hopefully collide into each other. They believe that this will hopefully show insight to if this was how the universe was created or gain some information otherwise through the experiment.

What could happen if this experiment goes wrong? Another article states scientists have dismissed the fear of the earth will be sucked into a black hole caused by this experiment. Another article explains a lawsuit case which tried to shut down the project because of the fear of the black holes expanding and devouring the planet. The article also explains that they have used large particle colliders for years to smash particles together but never to this size.

Since this project is being created to try and form more insight on the creation of earth, we don’t know exactly how it will play out, so isn’t it possible for this to go terribly wrong?

The Dark Knight

As reported on WNYT News Channel 13 I found out that the movie The Dark Knight is now number 2 in movie history to have made the most money in the box office. Second of course to the legendary Titanic. According to Eonline.com The Dark Knight broke $500 million dollars in box office sales and nears Titanic within a $100 million margin. Before the movie was even released there was a lot of hype about Heath Ledgers great performance as the Joker questioning a posthumous Oscar.

I along with many others despite work early in the morning, went to the midnight showing of The Dark Knight. When I got out of the movie I did think “Wow, Heath did such a good job.” I thought the movie was great, more than just the classic Batman movie, more plot and romance. I recommended the movie to everyone I knew.

About two weeks later my friend really wanted me to see the movie with her and I thought it was definitely good enough to watch a second time. Though leaving the theater the second time, I was somewhat disappointed. It wasn’t one of those movies that amaze you the second, third, fourth time you watch it. I saw that yes it was still a good movie and Heath did a good job as the Joker. Was it as great as everyones making it out to be though? I don’t believe so.

Heath’s laugh was great, his walk very good. His constant licking of his lips, very creepy. He did an overall very good job. His makeup did help the creepiness. The script of his continual new stories of how he got his scars made him humorous and still very creepy. Don’t get me wrong it was a good movie. I would highly recommend everyone to see it but I don’t think I’d go as far as to say it was the best movie I’ve seen this year. Let alone excellent enough to make it to #2 in the box office for all times.
